From January 5th to January 11, 2014, the Town of Breckenridge will celebrate their annual Ullr Festival.  Since Ullr, the God of Snow, bestows the Colorado mountains with an abundance of white fluffy powder, Breckenridge locals and visitors understand the importance of remaining in his good graces.

The Story of Ullr

If he ever manifested himself in human form, Ullr, the Norse God of Snow, would be the Ultimate Winter Olympics athlete.  Legend has it that he blanketed the earth with snow to protect it from harm.  At times, he would streak across the sky, leaving the brilliant stars as trail markers.

One of his many journeys delivered him to Breckenridge, Colorado, where he decided to take up residence.  Every year, Ullr blesses the town with some of the finest snow in the world. To repay him  for his gift, the people of Breckenridge hold a festival to honor the god of winter.

The Celebration Begins

This celebration began in 1963 when a few of the locals heard that Ullr was in town. Of course, they wanted him to stay, so they went to the Town Council and lobbied to star Ullr Fest.

Throughout the years, the festival evolved, and added events such as  the Ullr Ball, the Ullr Bonfire, the Ullr Parade, Snow Sculpting, Ullr King and Queen, the Ullympics and the Ullr Dating Game. Since the people of Breckenridge are always looking for an excuse to party, the festival is a perfect match for the local culture.
