The first chairs of the international season are only weeks away. Whether you’re chasing early turns in Banff, a December week in the Alps, or Japan’s famous powder, here’s when the lifts are scheduled to start turning. International ski resort opening dates are announced by each resort and, as always, depend on Mother Nature.
If you’re planning a trip abroad this winter, now is the time to lock in flights and lodging. Early-season weeks often come with better rates and shorter lift lines, and a little planning goes a long way toward making the most of your time on the mountain.
International Ski Resort Opening Dates
Canada
Canada’s resorts are some of the first in North America to fire up the lifts, thanks to high elevations and cold early-winter temperatures. The Rockies usually lead the way, with the West Coast and Quebec following close behind.
- Lake Louise, AB: Nov 6 (tentative). Often one of the first resorts in Canada to open, with sweeping views of the Rockies from nearly every run.
- Banff Sunshine Village, AB: November, exact date to be announced. Known for its long season and naturally abundant snow.
- Whistler Blackcomb, BC: Nov 20 (target). North America’s largest ski resort, with two mountains and a lively village to match.
- Mont-Tremblant, QC: Nov 26. Eastern Canada’s marquee resort, with a European-style village at its base.
- Revelstoke, BC: Dec 5. Home to the biggest vertical in North America and legendary deep snow.
European Alps
The Alps offer some of the most varied skiing in the world, from high glacier runs to huge linked ski areas that span multiple villages. High-altitude resorts open first, with the bigger networks coming online through early December.
- Zermatt, Switzerland: Nov 1 on the glacier; Sunnegga and Gornergrat open Nov 28. Glacier skiing under the Matterhorn makes Zermatt one of the earliest openings in the Alps.
- Val d’Isère, France: Nov 28. Its high elevation makes it a reliable early-season pick.
- Chamonix, France: Grands Montets in late November; the rest of the valley Dec 12. A bucket-list destination for advanced skiers and off-piste fans.
- St. Anton am Arlberg, Austria: Dec 2. Often called the cradle of alpine skiing and famous for its après scene.
- Courchevel / Les 3 Vallées, France: Dec 4, with all of Les 3 Vallées linked Dec 5. The world’s largest linked ski area, with miles of terrain to explore.
- Verbier, Switzerland: Dec 5, with the full 4 Vallées Dec 12. A freeride favorite with a buzzing village atmosphere.
- Cortina d’Ampezzo, Italy: Late November to early December. Fresh off hosting the 2026 Winter Olympics, set against the dramatic Dolomites.
Japan
Japan’s reputation for light, dry powder draws skiers from around the world. Hokkaido resorts open first, with Honshu following soon after.
- Niseko United, Hokkaido: Nov 28. Japan’s best-known powder destination, with four interconnected resorts.
- Furano, Hokkaido: Nov 28. A quieter alternative with famously dry snow.
- Hakuba Happo-one, Nagano: Dec 1. A 1998 Olympic venue with big terrain and alpine views.
Southern Hemisphere: Plan Ahead for 2027
South America and New Zealand are skiing into October this year, with Valle Nevado running until Oct 18. Next season, Australia typically opens on the June long weekend, New Zealand from late May to late June, and Chile and Argentina from mid-June to early July. If you want to ski through summer, it’s never too early to start planning.
Tips for Early-Season Travel
Early-season skiing can be some of the best of the year, but it pays to be flexible. Check the resort’s snow report before you go, and consider booking refundable lodging in case opening dates shift.
