Mammoth Mountain

Mammoth Mountain

California is one of the most diverse states in the U.S. The Golden State offers thousands of miles of beautiful, sandy beaches, swimming, surf and golf galore. But if you head just north of Los Angeles you’ll find some of the best ski resorts in the country.

The Mammoth lakes area, nestled deep in the Inyo National Forest of California, separates itself when discussing ski terrains. Just a quick day trip north of L.A. lies a world-renowned ski area called Mammoth Mountain Ski Resort in Mono Country.

The Mountain

This region is special for many reasons, one of which is because Mammoth Mountain is a lava dome complex that was formed starting 110,000 years ago. The dome reaches 11,053 feet, which is the highest summit of every California ski resort. This extreme elevation provides some of the highest quality snow in the state and a ski season that can last all the way through July, making it the ski resort with the longest season in North America. Furthermore, Mammoth Mountain averages 300 days of sunshine per year and 400 inches of snowfall.

Not only does this dome provide spectacular views and an exceptionally long season but, it is great for every type of skier, which makes the resort a great destination for family vacations. According to some, Mammoth Mountain has the best staff in the business, including their ski and snowboarding school instructors. Mammoth Mountain is proud to offer lessons from their leading snowboarding and skiing school – so proud and confident with the quality of their lessons that they even offer a free lesson if you are not satisfied.

A quick fact about Mammoth’s staff is that some instructors are PSIA and AASI certified, and they are from all over the world including New Zealand, Scotland and South Korea.

Winter Activities

Skiing and Snowboarding are without a doubt the main attractions at Mammoth Mountain, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t spend at least a little bit of time exploring the other various activities this resort has to offer. Throughout the winter months, guests can check out Wolly’s Tube Park, take a scenic gondola ride, shred snow on a snowmobile, take a Snowcat for a spin or take tours of the dome.

Taking a gondola tour over Mammoth Mountain is an absolute must. Not only do riders get to experience one of the highest summits in California, but they also get a 360 degree and uninterrupted view of the Sierra Nevada and the San Joaquin River Valley.

Events

Mammoth mountain also plays host to several special events over the course of a calendar year. One of which is called the Chix on Stix Experience with Stacey Cook. According to their website, this event helps connect women through their love of sports, good health and the outdoors. Not only is this event special because it is devoted to connecting women with the same passion, but also because it’s put on by skilled Olympian Stacey Cook.

With their breathtaking views, adventurous summits and 4+ ratings on TripAdvisor, Yelp and many more, Mammoth Mountain is a ski area that shouldn’t be missed. Don’t forget to have Ship Skis send your gear ahead of time when scheduling the perfect Mammoth Mountain vacation.
