As winter approaches, skiers and snowboarders start asking the same question: when does ski season start? The answer depends on where you go. Elevation, weather patterns, and snowmaking capacity all play a part. This year there is extra optimism, since resorts are pointing to a developing Super El Niño as a sign of a big snow year.
In North America, the 2026-27 ski season starts in late October, when high-elevation Colorado areas like Arapahoe Basin and Keystone open as soon as snowmaking allows. Most major destination resorts open between November 6 and December 5, 2026, with Thanksgiving week (November 20-27) the busiest stretch of opening days. Peak conditions run from mid-January through February, and many resorts stay open into April or May 2027.
Below are the announced 2026-27 opening dates for top resorts, a month-by-month breakdown of the season, and tips for timing your trip.

When Does Ski Season Start? A Month-by-Month Breakdown
Early Season Openers (October to Early November)
The first lifts of the 2026-27 season will turn in Colorado in late October. High-elevation resorts in Colorado and the Canadian Rockies are first because they get cold enough for snowmaking earliest.
- Keystone (Colorado): Keystone was the first North American resort to open last season, on October 25, 2025. Vail Resorts says it will open again as soon as possible in October 2026.
- Arapahoe Basin (Colorado): A-Basin has opened first in most of the past 10 seasons, as early as October 11 in 2019. Its high elevation and north-facing terrain make it a perennial contender.
- Breckenridge (Colorado): Breckenridge targets November 6, the earliest fixed date of any major destination resort this season. Expect limited terrain at first, with more opening through November and December.
- Banff Sunshine and Lake Louise (Alberta): Both are projected to open November 6, making them Canada’s earliest big-name openers.
The Thanksgiving Rush (Mid-November to Early December)
Most destination resorts open the week before or of Thanksgiving, which falls on November 26, 2026. This is when ski season really begins for most travelers.
- Park City Mountain (Utah): Opening November 20, the Friday before Thanksgiving. It’s one of the easiest early-season trips thanks to its short drive from Salt Lake City’s airport.
- Whistler Blackcomb (British Columbia): Also targeting November 20. North America’s largest resort is a strong pick for a Thanksgiving trip north of the border.
- Aspen Snowmass (Colorado): Aspen Mountain and Snowmass open November 26, one day before Thanksgiving. Aspen Highlands and Buttermilk follow December 12.
- Deer Valley (Utah): Deer Valley targets December 5, keeping its tradition of opening the first weekend in December. This season adds the new Hail Peak terrain, bringing the resort to about 4,500 skiable acres.
Peak Season (Mid-January to February)
By the time New Year’s has passed, ski season is in full swing. The best conditions, a mix of deep snowpack and cold temperatures, usually arrive from mid-January through February. Nearly every resort in North America and Europe has most lifts and trails open by then.
- Steamboat (Colorado): Known for its light, dry “Champagne Powder,” Steamboat is at its best in January and February. Its family-friendly vibe and varied terrain suit every level.
- Chamonix (France): Chamonix’s slopes are usually in prime shape by January. Its off-piste routes and Mont Blanc views draw serious skiers from around the world.
- Jackson Hole (Wyoming): February is prime time for Jackson Hole’s steep chutes and expert terrain. It opens November 27 this season.
Late Season (March to May)
Many resorts stay open into April, and some run into May or beyond. Spring skiing brings warmer weather, softer snow, and fewer crowds.
- Palisades Tahoe (California): Palisades often stays open into May, with soft snow and Lake Tahoe views.
- Whistler Blackcomb (British Columbia): Whistler typically runs until late May, with more than 8,000 acres of terrain for long spring days.
- Zermatt (Switzerland): The Matterhorn Glacier offers year-round skiing, so you can ski Zermatt even in summer.
- Aspen Mountain (Colorado): Aspen Mountain is scheduled to stay open until April 18, 2027, the latest of Aspen Snowmass’s four mountains.
What Determines When a Ski Resort Opens?
Opening day comes down to cold temperatures, snowmaking, and natural snowfall. An announced date is a target, not a guarantee.
- Elevation: Higher resorts stay colder, so they can make and hold snow earlier. That is why Colorado’s Summit County resorts usually open first.
- Latitude: Resorts farther north, like those in Canada and Montana, get cold weather sooner and often open by late November.
- Snowmaking: Resorts with big snowmaking systems can open even when natural snow is slow. Deer Valley, for example, says its system can now exceed 20,000 gallons a minute.
- Weather patterns: A warm October can push opening days back. Last season, a warm winter delayed many western openings.
Will El Niño Affect the 2026-27 Ski Season?
Resorts are watching a developing Super El Niño this winter, and Vail Resorts cited it when announcing its opening dates. El Niño winters have historically tended to favor the southern Rockies and Southwest, while the Pacific Northwest and northern Rockies often run drier. Opening days still depend on short-term October and November weather, so keep an eye on snow reports before you book.
When Should You Book Your 2026-27 Ski Trip?
Book Thanksgiving and holiday trips now, and lock in January-February trips by early fall. Here’s how to time it:
- Early season (November to mid-December): Book as soon as you can. Thanksgiving week and the December holidays fill up fast. Early-season terrain can be limited, so pick resorts with strong snowmaking.
- Peak season (January to February): Aim to reserve by fall for the best lodging rates. Presidents’ Day weekend (February 13-15, 2027) is one of the busiest times of the year.
- Spring (March to April): You’ll have more flexibility, but spring skiing still fills up during spring break weeks.
- Passes: Check which pass covers your resort before you buy lift tickets. Our 2026-27 ski pass comparison breaks down Epic, Ikon, Mountain Collective, and Indy.
