While some resorts in North Carolina can’t compete with those out west, Sugar Mountain is certainly the closest rival. It’s the biggest ski resort in North Carolina and offers more than 1,200 feet of vertical drops. As the resort continues to improve upon its snowmaking capabilities, you can enjoy a wide variety of terrain and runs across its 125 acres.
With a peak at more than 5,500 feet, Beech Mountain is the highest resort in the eastern region of the U.S. With 95 acres of skiable terrain and 17 ski trails, the fun is endless at Beech Mountain. The resort also boasts a Bavarian-style lodge, ice skating, tubing, and four restaurants.
Considering its close proximity to Asheville, Wolf Ridge is highly regarded as North Carolina’s most accessible ski resort. Although the resort is smaller than others, it’s much more affordable and oftentimes much less crowded. Wolf Ridge features 15 ski runs along with lit trails for night skiing.
Affordable prices and a family-friendly atmosphere are just a few reasons so many skiers are drawn to Appalachian Ski Mountain. The resort is also located near Winston-Salem and Charlotte, North Carolina allowing for easy access to the slopes. Its three terrain parks, groomed runs, and beginner trails make Appalachian a perfect stop on your ski trip to North Carolina.
While Cataloochee offers some incredible skiing conditions, many skiers flock to the slopes for the incredible views of the Great Smoky Mountains. Cataloochee can be crowded considering its close proximity to cities in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee, but its 18 runs remain lit past sundown for extended fun on the snow.
