If you’re a passionate skier, then Whistler Blackcomb is on your bucket list. The famous resort town represents the epitome of British Columbia beauty. Every year, more than two million skiers and boarders make a pilgrimage to this idyllic destination from all over the world.Read More
With that said, a lot of people seem to know plenty about this beautiful resort, but here are six things you probably didn’t know about Whistler.
You wouldn’t guess it now but the ritzy Whistler Village was once a garbage dump. In 1977 a community plan proposed a tourist village at the intersection of Whistler and Blackcomb Mountain and in 1978 construction of the current Whistler Village began.
Back before the 1970’s Whistler Mountain was called London Mountain after a mining claim and because of the thick fog which hugged the base of the mountain. The name was changed to Whistler due to the unique call of the local hoary marmot in the late 1960’s.
The sun is out, its slush conditions and you’re rocking a T-shirt and a sad face. Cheer up- the season is not over! Did you know that you can ski and ride all summer? That’s right, Horstman Glacier is open all summer long with access via two T-bars and a terrain park perfect for intermediate and advanced skiers and riders.
You haven’t truly experienced Whistler until you’ve floated through the sky in one of the red or silver cabins. The Gondola holds two Guinness Book of World Records: one for being the highest cable car above ground, and the other for the longest unsupported span between two cable car towers. Now visitors have the ability to travel between the two without ever taking off their boots.
Located at the base of both mountains, the Village is filled with shopping, dining, concerts and more. You can basically ditch the car and walk to everything. But if you are looking for something more adventurous, snowmobile tours, zip line, cross-country ski, or bobsled are all available. If all of that sounds far too rowdy, just relax in one of the many spas or the amazing baths at the Scandinavia Spa
And for the riders in your group, Whistler après achieves top marks by almost every ski and snowboard publication. Check out the GLC on Whistler for good times or, if you want to dance in your ski boots, head to the Kokanee Après at Merlins on Blackcomb. Regardless, you won’t have to look far to find great après.
You may not know it but the USD is worth $1.25 Canadian. That means when you buy a beer with a $20 bill USD at Happy Hour, you get $20 CDN back in change. What a deal! So what are you waiting for?
