Not only are you visiting a new destination, but you’re also immersing yourself in an entirely new sport with its own unique culture. Because you deserve to enjoy every second of your first trip to the slopes, we’ve gathered everything you should not do on your ski vacation.

What Not to Do on Your First Ski Trip

1. Know Your Skill Level

If you’re still researching where to go for your first ski trip, this tip is immensely helpful. Many first-time skiers may not know that different ski resorts offer different levels of difficulty. Some ski resorts may be great for beginners, while others may be better for more experienced skiers and snowboarders.

2. Book Ahead of Time

Booking well in advance ensures that your desired destination has plenty of availability. Winter is only so long and reservations fill up fast. Booking early may also save you additional dollars, as prices typically increase as winter gets closer.

3. Bring the Right Gear

Packing for your first ski trip requires some seriously well-thought-out packing lists. On top of your day-to-day clothes, you also have to remember every item that’s part of the ski or snowboard uniform! Keep in mind, colder weather means lots of layers, too. So, you’ll certainly need your largest suitcase!

4. Wear Enough Layers

Like we said, cold weather means lots of layers! So one of the biggest mistakes to avoid on your first ski trip is not wearing enough layers. Skiing and snowboarding will obviously expose you to below-freezing temperatures. And it’s far easier to remove a layer or two than it is to go all the way back to your accommodations to grab another coat.

5. Pack Refreshments

Snowsports are still, well, sports! That means you should treat it just like you would any other physical activity. Before leaving your hotel, resort, or rental home for the day, be sure to pack water and snacks. Several resorts do have slopeside restaurants, but it’s best to prepare for any situation on your first ski trip.

6. Don’t Forget Sunscreen

Skiing and snowboarding clothes do cover most of your body. But, parts of your face may still be exposed. Any part of your body that is still exposed to the sun should be covered with sunscreen. Even in 20-degree weather, you can still get sunburnt!

7. Get Lessons

If you are truly brand new to skiing or snowboarding, you can’t hit the slopes and expect to stay upright. One of the most important things to do on your first ski trip is to set time aside for private lessons. Most ski resorts offer private and group instruction sessions.

8. Ship Your Skis

Don’t ruin your first ski trip by dragging your bags through the airport. Think about it…dragging bulky skis and a snowboard plus your 50 lbs luggage to, from, and through the airport? It’s an absolute pain but Ship Skis is there to help. Ship Skis will ship your skis, snowboard, and luggage straight to your destination so you can travel stress-free to and from home.

December 21st, 2023

Planning and taking your first ski trip can be exciting but also intimidating!
